General Thoughts about 'Star Spangled Girl' (With Spoilers)

Overall, I like this movie. It's funny in places and moves along at a good pace, so it's never boring. Some of the pros and cons:
I hate saying this, because I've really liked Todd Susman in other roles, but his character just doesn't work for me.
It's not just Susman's performance. The way the role is written, this guy comes off as a stalker who's much too aggressive with Sandy Duncan's character, long before he really knows her. She's frightened by him, and I can't blame her. It's hard to have any sympathy for him when he's harassing her. And that's what it is -- harassment. This wouldn't fly in a movie today.
Yeah, I know he's supposed to be an eccentric character. But for the sake of the movie, he should also be likable and sympathetic. He's too annoying and too frightening around Duncan to be either one.
All of the major characters -- Andy, Norman, and Amy -- seem to "switch gears" much too quickly. Amy's crush on Andy happens too abruptly. Andy's eventual crush on Amy comes out of the blue. Norman's crush on Amy seems to disappear in an instant.
I like Sandy Duncan's accent. Some might find it annoying, but I'm a Southerner myself, and I appreciate the fact that it sounds authentic. Sandy Duncan is from Texas, and she sounds like a real Southerner, not a Hollywood actress with an unconvincing Southern accent.
The Neil Simon play, from what I've read, was a flop. This movie wasn't successful either, financially or critically. But I actually prefer it to many of the movies I've seen based on Simon's plays. I appreciate the acting in 'Plaza Suite' -- but never found the movie funny. I never cracked a smile during 'Barefoot in the Park.' This movie has some amusing ideas and moments, so it's better than 'Plaza' and 'Barefoot,' in my opinion.
But like most Simon-based movies, the dialogue feels 'overwritten.' It feels like everyone is reciting comedy lines, instead of speaking in a natural, spontaneous, conversational way. But that's a problem with Neil Simon's stuff, even when it is funny.
All in all, it's enjoyable, despite its flaws. I had never seen this movie before seeing it a few days ago. I'd never even seen snippets of it on TV. I mean, nothing. So it's nice to see a movie that truly is completely new.

Have to disagree. I have seen many movies in my time, but none so grating or ridiculous (both intrinsically and conceptually) than "Star Spangled Girl". It may very well be one of the 100 worst movies of all time.

You never even smiled watching Barefoot in the Park? Were you sleeping at the time? I think it is one of the best comedies ever! Who knew Robert Redford was funny?

When I saw this movie, I couldn't help but be reminded of what the New York Times critic said about the play.

"Neil Simon, your favorite gagman, hasn't had an idea for a play in some time. But he's written one anyway."

and Duncan plays Connie Steven's role (she couldn't have been to happy about that)
