I think this was one of the most perverted films coming off as art that I've ever seen

I hated this film

It was good for a comming of age but very off. He was kinda witty/average for a boy his age.I mean the ending wasn't exactly what I was thinking. I thought he'd grow out of it....not get some (For those who saw it, will get it)

I love HP

reply

A tender film. Yet at the same time, completely raw.

reply

He was 16 and full frontal. I don't get it. Was it the 70's or is it because it's French or because he is male? Why is okay then and not now? I'm not all psycho Christian Bush Republican. I'm simply and seriously wondering why this was acceptable at the time and not now. Now the world would be freaking out. As for me, I see it as "art," but that is because I'm not turned on or anything. Please give me insight:

I liked it very much. Great acting by young boy. Mother was god looking. I liked her style. She looked like a model.

reply

Just saw it on TCM. I was super high and i thought it was super hilarious and beautiful. I totally related to the mother's relationship with the young boy. What a special movie 10/10!

reply

What a bunch of sick perverts out there. Incest is not cool, even if you're mother is "god looking".

reply

Are there other movies with similar plots and equally engaging....The only other movie which comes to my mind is ma mere....

reply

Look for "Spanking the Monkey." Similar theme.

thanks kprp...

SPOILERS

I didn't get the slightest indication from this movie that the incest was not "cool" for the characters. They both seemed fine with it. In the end they all laughed. The movie was basically portraying all the debauchery as normal parts of growing up, including the incest. That didn't really connect with me.

Also it seemed out of place and not believable. Sure, the boy was very confused, but not *that* confused. And the mother seemed like a healthy person. For a son to want to have sex with his mother, something really sick has to be present in him, and that's equally true for a mother to want to have sex with her son. And then for them to actually do it, they both have to be really fu(ked up. I didn't really see any of that in the movie.

reply

what do you mean "god looking"?
are you saying this woman physically resembles god?

reply

i also watched this movie faded out of my mind and i thought it was beautiful. its a very important movie and very relevant to todays youth as well. i am 15 and i feel that i could relate to laurent in many ways

Films like this explore topics that are by their very nature unsuitable for some people whose views of the world are unremittingly negative and narrow. You don't have to approve of something to understand that human behavior is complex enough to forgive transgressions of the flesh as long as they are not deliberately vicious or exploitative of a weaker individual. This movie is courageous and honest and though somewhat shocking, it is very moving. In fact, for the Bible thumpers among us, it shows nothing that you can't find at least hinted at in the Bible.

reply

It is everything I expect from a French movie. Highly recommended.

reply

It is a beautiful film with a nice playful style to it that captured the subject matter very nicely.

LadyHildreth: "An important and beautiful film."

That's fair enough. I'd would also describe it as heretical yet humanly realistic.

I didn't like the kids' smoking scenes, but I think they were realistic. But why is the kid-with-cigar on the Criterion cover? Is that what Malle wanted? It's an unfortunate choice.
The shoplifting was another wincer, but again realistic.

Otherwise, yes, it was beautiful.

I disliked this film immensely. There wasn't one character I found redeemable. I couldn't have cared less if they all went over a mountainside and burst into flames. In fact, I would have preferred that ending. The only character I didn't hate was the Mother, but in the end, she too became unbearable. I just can't see how anyone could sympathize with any of these spoiled rotten characters. The only part that I somewhat liked was the incest scene. After that scene, I felt the two deserved each other and all the psychological crap they've got coming. Malle's worst for me.

ovpower: "There wasn't one character I found redeemable."
The protagonist is obviously supposed to be an anti-hero type. Most of the other characters were just foils for him.
Three overtly sympathetic and attractive characters were the mother, the prostitute and the little boyfriend, who balanced it just enough, I think.

You and others throw around the word beautiful far too easily. Besides the photography, please tell me one thing you found to be beautiful about this film.

reply

Aside from the production value, and a mostly attractive cast, I would note in particular the scene with the prostitute, the camp scene, and the incest scene, which were all sensitive subjects handled beautifully.

More generally I like the fact that a story like this is presented credibly, while allowing the sensuality to come through, and not defensively burying it in bathroom humor or contrived moralizing. This sort of thing is rare, and many people appreciate that fact.

I agree that there was no moralizing in this film. It doesn't make the subject matter or the characters any less palatable. If the sexes were reversed and it was a man banging his 15 year old daughter, is it possible that you could see that as a beautiful thing? I doubt it.

reply

"...If the sexes were reversed and it was a man banging his 15 year old daughter...?"

There's a fundamental distinction here of "active vs passive" that makes a big difference. It's not very likely that in a father-daughter incident the girl is really intent or willing, but we saw the boy fantasizing with his mother's undergarments and peeping at his naked mother.
So the character of the compared liaisons would be vastly different, although legally they might be the same.

I hope I'm not the only one who finds that statement to be incredibly sexist. Why couldn't a girl be willing? Let's just say for the sake of argument, that girls ARE capable of the same feelings boys are and the roles were reversed. If the story was also written with the same style, beauty etc. that you found in this film. Would you think that was ok? Dad banging his 15 year old daughter.

" Why couldn't a girl be willing? "
My statement was that "It's not very likely...". Girls are not as easily and frequently aroused as boys, and they are far more romantic and marriage-minded, not just horny all the time and sex-obsessed, like teenage boys.

"Would you think that was ok? Dad banging his 15 year old daughter."
"Active vs. passive" is the key to the distinction. The boy needs to be a physically active participant for the kind of encounter presented; not so for a girl. Your choice of language, i.e., "banging", only emphasizes that. In that hotel bed the boy was doing the physical "banging".

Thank you for confirming my suspicion that you are indeed sexist. It only took you like 2 freaking months! You just repeated that incredible line, so have fun getting out of that one. I'm guessing you are at least a sixty year old man, but whatever you are, I'm done with you.

Louis Malle did a great job keeping the tone gentle and innocent. The sensitive subjects that were touched on were handled well instead of them being seedy and vulgar. And like many others have already noted, it was beautifully filmed.

I know the attempt was to handle the subject matter with gentleness and innocence but I don't agree that's how it came across; not to me. Supposedly they 'fall' into the situation by accident. The mother shows her son affection as he helps her out of her clothes. Oh so innocent. Right! She was drunk and failed to find someone else she wanted to share her bed.

What led to the events that night started long before that particular night. The mother's loose ways, her neglect of her family, her failure to set a good example for them, and raise them properly, all factored into the equation. Long before the boys were born, she got involved with their father and was forced to marry him because she got pregnant.

The woman seems to go through life acting as if she's a victim; like things just happen to her like, oh, oops, she had sex with her son. Spare me! She's stumbling through life making and leaving messes in her wake. The husbands family was absolutely right about her.

In my opinion, she had already gone way too far when she talked to her son about her sex life, brought her lover to the room, and told him she wanted to run off with him. "We'll never speak of this and it will never happen again" is what she tells him after having sex with him. Wow, now the kid has all sorts of issues he can't deal with. He can't speak of it with her or anyone else. Talk about causing sexually deviancy.

Studies show a lot of prisoners have 'mommy issues.' Well, make room for one more warden. At the end when she laughs, it's all about realizing if her son had not gone out to sleep with whichever girl would have him, the rest of the family would have caught them naked in each other’s arms. I'd say at least the other sons were spared having to deal with that revelation but, hey, they have the same mother. She's probably already slept with both of them or will. In either case, they were already pretty messed up sexually and otherwise.

Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]

reply

You seem to be saying that she did what she did because that's what kind of person she was. Big surprise! Isn't the movie trying to show us that?

Also, a lot of prisoners tell psychologists what they think those psychologists want to hear. At one time, the absent-father-figure was a popular theory among psychologists, and we kept hearing that the prisoners were talking about that.

Well, make room for one more warden.

He's a fictional character. How can we check if he ended up in jail?

...the other sons...She's probably already slept with both of them or will.

Again, they're all fictional. Do you mean Malle intends for us to believe that is part of the story? Is it expressly implied anywhere in the film?
