This Movie Needs a DVD NOW!

It's surprising that still after 10 years of the DVD's existance, there is STILL no DVD for this underrated gem. There are plenty of selling points for this movie: Paul Newman, Henry Fonda, Lee Remick, Richard Jaeckel's Oscar-nominated performance, and Paul Newman (he acted and directed this; if you didn't already know by now). Write (e-mail is preferred here) to Universal and (kindly) have them consider this for DVD right away.

WELL, WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?

reply

I sent Universal an email ... as expected ... no response of any kind!

Do they ever respond?

reply

I'm not counting on a response, but I e-mailed them anyway and hope to get others to do the same. Great movie

reply

I got a response, although it didn't help on our quest:

Dear Ms. Baker,

Thank you for contacting Universal Studios Home Entertainment. We strive to provide the highest standard in product quality and customer care.

No plans have been announced for the DVD release of "Sometimes a Great Notion." A multitude of factors, including contractual issues, influence the timing and content of our DVD releases. Unfortunately, no further information is available as to when this title might become available on DVD.

I totally agree. There are so many old classics that I would like to add to my personal library. But this one is very special to me because I had a crush on Lee Remick when I was a boy and I have always thought that Richard Jackel was an overlooked great actor. There is another Lee Remick movie I would like to get, with Montgomery Cliff about a girl and her mother who live in the middle of a river that the goverment is going to flood because of a new dam they built.

On your finding, I ordered this and it was delivered in 1 day. The sender's address turned out to be just a few blocks from my house in Houston - lucky me! It arrived and I haven't watched it yet, but the packaging and printing and so on is much more impressive than that I had braced myself for. I'm happy with the purchase so far (again, haven't watched it yet).

I've never had a chance to see the film, but I would buy it immediately if it were released on DVD. It's based on one of my favorite novels, it's got my favorite actor (Paul Newman), and it comes from one of my favorite periods (the early 70s), so whether it's some kind of underrated gem or not, I imagine it has to at least be worthwile.

I bought the VHS on Amazon.com, made a DVD of it and put the tape back on Amazon.com

reply

Amazon.co.uk seems to have it. Is that a more official DVD than that Amazon.com has on offer?

reply

It is available on DVD now. It is only offered for sale through Amazon however.
