Why did Link...? (SPOILER)

Why did Link throw the sword out at the end of the movie?

It's been years since I've seen this movie.

I wondered why he tossed the coin before the train with the Japanese ambassador arrives.

Are you referring to when he hang the sword in the lines/cables before the train arrives?
Of course he puts it there so the japanese ambassador can have it. He can´t stay and wait for him because he is wanted by the sheriff and the soldiers. Then he would go to jail or get killed.

is that why? i only saw the movie once - and it was years ago. i got the impression that he just chucked it since the samurai was now dead and it didn't matter any more. thanks.

He went to the trouble of getting the sword as far as the train crossing, so it obviously still mattered.

I assumed the coin toss was his way of resolving any last-minute do-I-give-it-back-or-not conflict, to rationalize his either returning or not returning the sword to the ambassador.

reply

Gee, I sure hope that the sword stood out enough for the ambassador to actually notice.

Now I have three sequels. Ho ho ho.

Maybe something is different in some versions but the sword was left up on the wire that paralleled the train tracks. The train would stop to take on water. There is no chance that in that wide open space no one would see the sword hanging there.

Link had no doubts that he was returning the sword. He gave his word to someone he consider "quite a man"

Upon returning the sword and not having a chance to find the money, he had no place to go and nothing to do. He flipped the coin to decide on which way to go.

reply

I was thinking he flipped the coin to decide whether to rob the train or not.
