The Drones

Possible Spoilers

I can remember watching this as a kid and being a sentimental chap, it still has a place in my heart. It was the drones that did it for me. They had such character and I was so gutted when we lose two of them.

I could never understand why he took drone 2 with him to die. He says because he's damaged he wouldn't be able to help drone 1 but surely you could leave them together for company?? You could see during the scene where he tries to repair number 2 that number 1 wanted to stay with this friend. Has always bothered me that...

I was about 8 when it was first shown on TV and I was in tears at the end, still get a lump now!

Yes.

It's a sad ending.

I think the suggestion is that Lowell reckons the damaged drone might accidentally stuff things up for the intact drone, who theoretically, should be able to keep the dome self-sustaining.

Watching it again recently, reminded me of how relentlessly downbeat the film is.🐭

Maybe he simply wanted to have a company in his last moments.

Reminds me of the first time I saw The Black Hole and believed our 'Henry Hoover' vacuum cleaner was a B.O.B. model droid. Mum didn't take to kindly to me beating it up with a bit of wood to make it look more like B.O.B. :/
