SPOILERS. What really happened.

Thanks to the magic of YouTube, nostaligic fans of the Golden Age of Television Fright Films, 1970-1974, can once again enjoy their favorite, movie-of-the-week scare pic.

SHE WAITS was a classic example of a gothic suspense thriller with supernatural elements. The director wanted to keep us guessing whether Laura was actually possessed or whether Mike's mother was actually imagining things.

SPOILERS **** SPOILERS ***** SPOILERS

Even at the end, husband Mike refuses to believe what really happened. He is in his rational state of denial. Yes, Laura was temporarily possessed by the angry, vengeful ghost of Elaine, who mistakenly thought her husband, Mike, had shot her with the revolver. Fortunately, Mike is able to jog the memory of Elaine - speaking through Laura - and the truth comes out. Laura had revealed things that she could not possibly know, for example, where Elaine and David (Davy) had had their extra-marital affair, and that it was Davy who purchased the music box for Elaine. Earlier in the movie, Mike had adamantly denied purchasing the music box to Laura as they dined in a restaurant. It was true, because we learned that Davy had purchased the gift for Elaine. Oddly, Mike never questioned Elaine where she obtained the music box. When 'Elaine' Laura finally remembers that it was Davy who shot her, Davy panics and admits it, but that it was a mistake. Unfortunately, the movie director did not allow Davy to explain what happened. I can only surmise that when Elaine telephoned Davy to come over that night, she was so drunk and distraught that she had the pistol, ready to kill herself. Davy might have tried to wrestle the pistol away from Elaine and the firearm discharged, killing Elaine accidentally as Davy claimed. After Davy ran away, Mike's mother came into the room and discovered Elaine's body on the floor and the revolver nearby. Thinking quickly, the mother placed the revolver into Elaine's hand. But for two years the mother mistakenly thought her son, Mike, had killed Elaine.

It wasn't a great movie, but ranked among the typical, gothic suspense mystery thrillers of that time period, it was a good entry, one that would have spooked any young person watching the movie. I give SHE WAITS, at least, two stars out of four, which means, 'fair', or, 'worth a look'.
