''Same old sixes and sevens''

At the beginning when Shaft goes up to the blind newspaper vendor, Shaft asks him how he's doing and the vendor replies "Same old sixes and sevens.". Does anyone know what that phrase means? Does it have something to do with the man being blind? Is it a N.Y. saying?

'sixes + sevens' is an old British slang expression that means 'crazy & confused.'

Okay. I wonder why they picked those two numbers. I would think six and nine would be more confusing.

I thought it was related to shooting craps perhaps. Or like "same old *beep* the daily grind, or status quo.
