TMC - Censored

Just watched this again... DVR'd from TCM. Obviously a very heavily censored version. Has TCM ever played the un-edited version?

reply

What did they edit?

Language was heavily edited. I don't recall enough about the movie to determine wether any scenes were cut but you can tell the curses were cut or over dubbed.

reply

Usually when I watch it, the language is unedited.

I actually prefer the network broadcast version. I grew up watching it a lot on TBS or WGN, I think. The curse words seem like they were added half-heartedly and it didn't help the movie. When I watched the uncensored VHS and DVD; they were disappointing. The profanity seemed tacked-on and didn't fit usually. Who talks like that? "Close it yourself, sh!tty!" Many lines were clearly dubbed even in the uncensored, like Vic talking on the phone at the end. Clearly a totally different guy.

Having grown up watching this movie on network TV like TBS, I think it holds up fairly well even censored. Better than other movies. I kind of preferred the one I saw on TV because I had seen it so many times long before seeing the uncensored on VHS and DVD. The profanity seems kind of klunky for the most part like it was added half-heartedly. "Close it yourself, sh!tty."

I saw this back when it was originally released, one of the first R-rated movies I had ever seen at the age of 10. Needless to say, the language really took me by surprise. I think that "Shaft", unlike most blaxploitation movies, has held up quite well.

Nothing was dubbed over or censored. Just like when I watched it back in '71.
