Questions...(SPOILER ALERT)

Why did gypsy Jack want to retrieve the bracelet? He didn't know anyone had been murdered? Right?
And what was the motivation for the killings?
How did Barker know the killer would come back for the bracelet? The owner of the bracelet wasn't even the killer!

reply

Ah, but the owner of the bracelet WAS the killer. Here's what went down:

The bracelet read "JACKO", while the gypsy's name was simply Jack. Jacko worked for Steve, Sarah's boyfriend, at the stables. We briefly see him a few times when she first visits Steve.

When Sarah showed up at the gypsy's settlement after falling off the horse and they saw the bracelet, they thought that Jack stole the bracelet from Jacko and was the killer. This is why they freaked out and locked in her in that shed. At this point, both the gypsies and the audience are under the assumption that Jack did it.

Jack confesses to going to the house because he had a date with Sandy. Remember when she mentions meeting a guy up town and had a date that night? It was Jack, the gypsy. When she didn't show(because Jacko killed her), he went to the house to see what was going on. He then shows Steve and the gang the bracelet, which read JACKO. They put two and two together, and finally realized the gypsy was innocent.

They rushed back to the house where Sarah was, because they left Jacko with her for safety reasons. This is when Steve beats up Jacko and saves Sarah. The end.

Unfortunately I can't tell you what the motive is. I really don't know. I hope this helps.

This helps me immensely. Thanks very much for the explanation.

One thing I don't understand, though: How did Jacko know that the bracelet would be in Sarah's pocket? That is why he was rummaging around in Sarah's pockets, right?

And where did Jacko get those distinctive boots with the cool star on them? OK, that's two questions.

reply

When Jacko goes back to the house after realizing his bracelet fell off and tries to stop Sarah from riding the horse, he notices the bracelet in her back pocket. We seem him grab at it a number of times before the horse eventually kicks him and Sarah rides off. He simply assumed it was still in her back pocket while she was taking a bath.

As for the boots, sorry, I have no idea.

Thanks very much for the additional detail about Jacko and the bracelet. I think I focused too much on Jack as the killer, even when he explained himself, and I missed some crucial details about Jacko. I'm going to watch this again with those details in mind. I rarely do that, but this film merits a second viewing. Thanks again for your help.

Sarah has to feel her way in the bath tub to put the plug into the drain hole, yet she doesn't notice her uncle lying in the tub. This happens not once, but twice.

The horse gallops off full speed to Steve's farm, leaving Jacko behind at the Rextons' Manor Farm. And yet when the horse arrives, Jacko is already there and changed into his other, blood free clothes.

Later on, for no reason at all, Jacko changes back into his murder outfit just to search Sarah's pockets in the bathroom. Having just changed into his murder boots, he decides takes them off again when going upstairs.

Sarah's uncle splashed Jack's boots with puddle water. I think Jacko was p'o'd (as well as a little mental) at the uncle's lackidasical attitude, so he was more or less stalking him (remember the car was scratched...Jacko did it. i guess the more he thought about it, the more he was pissed.

what i don't actually know (after 30 something years) is did Jacko know that Sarah was the boss's chickie? i think he didn't.

i think she only did the bathroom thing once, and never got to putting the plug in the drain before Steve called on her.

reply

Thchou, she does not put her hand in the tub. there is knob on the top of the tub between the water valves. she pushes and pulls it.

Swing away, Merrill....Merrill, swing away...

Nope. the bath in her aunt and uncle's home doesn't have a plug on a chain, it has a little handle between the taps that you turn to put the plug in.

Now put that gun down Heidi! You’re not solving anything by massacring people!

Thanks to PATRICK1962 for your subject post and to everyone here for your answers . I have not seen this movie in at least 25 years now ( watched it on TV a few times when I was a teenager ) . I will most likely rent this movie again soon ( forgot how good this storyline was - very intense ) .

I think the boots business is a bit of a problem. He seems to change in and out of them quite a few times (and his denim outfit) and I'm not sure he'd have the time to do it. Although, I suppose changing his outfit could be part of his illness...

Boots . . . reckon he got them down the King's Rd (there were a shop there till about the mid-70s called Wild Wild West).

But why did he spend so much time wandering around Soho in them when he lived/worked way out in the commuter belt? And what's with those bafflingly pointless shots of him sat in 'groovy' smoky pubs? Like when he's got his sexy boots up on the ol'leather seats and the landlord comes over to give him what for. Presumably it were a (corny, obvious) way of showing us what a 'bad boy' he was while simultaneously getting in a bit of post-swinging London for the American market.

Still, great fun film, and Farrow's always a joy to watch. Loving that bassy soundtrack too.

I saw this movie years ago and remember a weird harpsichord-sounding repeated phrase in the score but don't recall the ending - I have a vague memory of the killer killing Mia's character and walking back into town but surely that can't be right?
