Pretty stupid that its not on DVD

Nicholson?

Orson?

= dollars from rentals and purchases, sooooo don't get me started.

I had to pick mine up from kultflixxx.org dude. I agree, a film of this caliber is still sitting in obscurity.

Henry Jaglom seems relatively disinterested in releasing this film, even though he talks about it all over the internet.

Hopefully that'll change, as I'd love to see a dvd with a commentary. It would be nice of him to explain himself on a few parts.

:) :)

Go on Henry Jaglom's website...henryjaglom.com. He offers a link to purchase A Safe Place on DVD.

There is a Sony box set coming in October!!!

It is called the "New Hollywood Box Set".

It contains "Easy Rider", "Five Easy Pieces", "A Safe Place", "The Last Picture Show", "Drive, He Said", "Head", and "The King of Marvin Gardens".

Sounds absolutely awesome.

The Criterion Collection is going to release it before the end of the year along with Drive He Said

Checking out Criterion's site right now.

Pretty lame that Columbia (?) canceled the New Hollywood box set!

reply

Criterion picked it up, exact same films from their set. Criterion put the film on Blu as well as DVD. It's probably better this waym the set isn't overtly expensive either.

reply

Have you seen the film? I own the BBS set and A SAFE PLACE has no place in the set nor in the Criterion Collection.

Well, it IS in the set and in The Criterion Collection. Check out their website, you'll see that they have a few questionable choices for release.

reply

I never said it wasn't in the set. You misunderstood my comment.

reply

I made my comment before I had the misfortune of trying to watch the film 3 times, which was a year and a half ago, and thus didn't know how awful it truly was.

jmuzzi, what are some of the films you find questionable in the Criterion Collection? I'm honestly curious, as I've found this one to be the worst out of any of the films I've watched and/or owned from a collection of over 600 films. Even some of the ones I didn't enjoy, I could still see their merit of being added to the collection. This one, I can't, and realise that it's all personal opinion. I don't think it's ruined the integrity of Criterion, but it's definitely a title I loathe.

reply

Agreed. It's most definitely a terrible, terrible film.

I think films that are historically important and unique have a place in the Criterion Collection, and this one qualifies (albeit barely). This is an interesting oddity, even though it's not particularly good. I'll be generous and give this 5/10, and I'll move on to better films that are historically important and unique – in and outside of the Criterion Collection.

reply

There are some true duds in the collection FOR SURE.

The fact that this comes along for the ride beside The Last Picture Show and Easy Rider makes it at least less disappointing.

Truth is, though, even terrible movies can have historical significance.

I'm going to throw in my two cents here as well and say A Safe Place stunk. I watched each film from the BBS films from the Criterion Collection and by the time I got to the end of A Safe Place, I thought, "What the hell did I just watch?" It has an interesting premise, I'll admit, but both the execution and the writing were so poor, it is a shame because I really liked Five Easy Pieces and The Last Picture Show. No wonder this film tanked.

1/10

Cast Away...It's like Forrest Gump, but on an island.

A SAFE PLACE is a fine film, and its inclusion in the Criterion Collection is, for me, a reason to celebrate. Maybe you and your cronies on here aren't watching it with the proper perspective, which is to say an open-minded one.
