Music score is added bonus to poorly written film

I'll leave the discussion of plot, characterization, etc, to other posts. I like the fact that this film was scored by one of the old-school great Hollywood composers, Hugo Friedhofer.
His score makes this movie seem better than it is. After all, he's an Oscar-winning composer (The Best Years Of Our Lives, 1946) who cut his teeth orchestrating and arranging some of the most famous film music in history (The Adventures of Robin Hood, 1938, Gone With The Wind, 1939) and had done another war film for Corman before (The Secret Invasion, 1964).

It sounds like he did not have as big a budget for music as Jerry Goldsmith had for his score to The Blue Max, 1966.
The orchestra sounds sparse and poorly recorded, but the quality of his music shines through. It's understated, not trying to be too epic, but suggesting the end of chivalry due to modern warfare. The music is the only element besides the aerial photography that gives this film any sense of depth.

If only the script was as good as the music.
