Difference between the giallo and slasher genres?

In many ways, they are similar (strings of murders, etc.). Is the main difference that giallo involves a bit more mystery in the plot (whodunit and all that), or is there something else?

Vandyvch, you are right. Giallo's have more of a mystery/thriller aspect to them, while Slashers are pure hack 'em up horror films.

I've also noticed that in slashers, there is more of a focus on the actual killer, while giallo's focus on the actual murder's themselves. For example, in Halloween, the focus is primarily on Michael Myers, while in Deep Red, we see a series of murders but don't find out who the killer is until the end.

But yeah, giallo's definitely had major influence on hollywood horror films.

Giallo plural is gialli, not "giallo's."

bird with the crystal plumage is what i would consider a pure giallo.

halloween is what i would consider a pure slasher.

then there are films that are a mix of each like suspiria, ny ripper, tenebre, etc...

As a whole I'd say that this poster is correct in their assesment regarding the differences between these two horror generes. However this is not always the case as I feel that the original 'Friday The 13th' film was pretty much a mystery/thriller as well as being a classic slasher film.

A lot of the giallos are detective/mystery stories to a larger level than most slashers. Though some slashers have that element as well most of them like Friday the 13th 1, 2, 3, 4, etc, etc, lol, etc. are just about murder and blood.

This and TORSO are more slasher than giallo and BLOOD AND BLACK LACE and THE NEW YORK RIPPER is an even blend of the two if that clears matters up. DEEP RED, on the other hand, is pure giallo.

Friday the 13th 1 is sort of like a giallo, as well as Part 5.
