I'm confused about Simon's role in this plot (SPOILERS!)

Aside from the murder of the four teenagers, I'm not sure what Simon's role is in the murder plot. The way I understood it, Ventura planned the murder of the Countess because she wouldn't sell her land to him. Ventura got his lady friend (Laura?) involved and sent her to seduce Donati, the Countess's husband. Apparently Laura convinced Donati to murder the Countess.

But then what? Was it Simon who came out of the shadows and murdered Donati? And if so, why would he stand by and watch his own mother be garroted? If he cared about his mother enough that he would want revenge on her murderer, then why would he be a part of a scheme to kill her in the first place? And if he didn't know she was going to be murdered, why was he lurking there waiting to kill Donati in the first place?

Ventura had Simon in on the whole conspiracy from the beginning, since there was that scene in the boat house where they exchanged money, so Simon knew about Ventura's intentions. But when Laura confronts Simon in the boat house near the end of the film, he gets angry at her and she blames the Countess's murder on Ventura. Can someone clue me in to what I'm missing here?

You are obviously a little confused, Simon found his mother dead and killed Donati, he had nothing to do with his mothers death. He played along with Ventura to get some quick money and then planned to kill him, and the girl to once she came back. He never was really in cahoots with Ventura, Ventura just thought Simon was, when the whole time he was seeking revenge in all those involved and all those who happened upon the scene.

Ah, that actually explained it a little for me - thanks. Wow, so, the guy's mother gets killed and he seeks revenge and kills a group of teenagers that swim in "his" lake" and have sex … I'm glad no other movie has ripped off this plot :)

That explanation is confusing and wrong, I believe.

Simone killed Donati because he killed his mother, yes; clearly he didn't witnessed his mother's murder (or if he did and didn't intervene, then he was crazy, which would make sense too seeing what he does later on). So that's one is right.

But the deal between Ventura and Simone wasn't a trick. It took place after the murder of the countess, because Simone inherited the bay from her (that's why it was a problem for Renata, the legitimate daughter, and Alberto who wanted to eliminate him) and he was selling it in secret to Ventura, whom he trusted.

Simone got mad at Laura because he knew she was Donati's lover and betrayed her mother, but he did not know she was in reality with Ventura!
