The ending (Spoilers)

So what do you think happened at the end to Foster and Tarkington on the cliff? Tarkington says he'll do his best to see that Foster isn't shot by the Germans, he is wearing a German uniform, and they even joke that Rommel wouldn't shoot two stamp collectors. But the way that last scene is shot makes me think they were gunned down on the spot. The German soldiers accompanying the Panzers approach the duo in a long line, guns pointed at them.

Maybe it was just me, but that seemed pretty ominous to me. It even had Foster and Tarkington laughing, possibly at their own deaths? This could all be overanalyzing, but I'm curious either way what other people think.

Burton should have just taken off his tunic & thrown it over the cliff-otherwise I don`t rate his chances.

The laughter is that of the Italian woman that the soldier was taking care of. It seems that her laugh was the last thing he thought of before dying...

just finished watching the movie today

comparing to a real life scenario they'd be shot imho
but in this movie most likely not :)

Yes, I heard the baby crying. It was very strange. The suggestion about the Italian woman laughing is probably correct, but it doesn't work.
