The Aircraft Attack

Foster states fairly clearly that an aircraft will attack the convoy at 5 O'clock but how could they have been so sure that the convoy would have stopped for the night after they had captured Foster - what if they hadn't?

Also was there not the risk of some of the prisoners being killed or injured as well when the aircraft attacks the convoy?
