This film reminded me of....

Fellini's Roma.

But I think Pasolini did it far way better than Fellini in that particular case. I really love the characters and the stories are hilarious. Pasolini captures the fairy-tale-mood very well and I was enjoyably entertained every minute I was watching this.

I had forgotten how wonderful this film really is.

I first saw it about 2 years after its initial release, at some "art" theater and I liked it then. Seeing just a couple of days ago on Netflix streaming brought home just how wonderful the photography was, the brilliant colors. Pasolini really knows how to assemble a good cast and make them fit the film. It is very easy to overlook the often amateurish acting when a person looks like what you'd imagine they actually looked like back then.

The towns and other locations he chose really made you feel that nothing has changed, the costumes were wonderful, etc. There were some truly hilarious moments that had me laughing out loud, such as the scene where Ninetto Davoli was standing in the soup line and his bowl was about 5 times larger than anyone else's....a great sight gag, if ever there was one, but he played his part very funny from start to finish and was my favorite in the film.

I'm glad I chose to view this again....time well spent & lots of fun, to boot.

It's far more similar to Satyricon, if we're going to be comparing to Fellini. Roma doesn't have anywhere near the level of lewdness as Canterbury Tales.
