What's with all the different narrators?

Why did they decide they needed a different narrator everytime they aired this (or put it on video)? The first time I saw it was with Alan Thicke, and then I saw the version with Ringo and it really turned me off. I was used to hearing it with Thicke.

My friend and his mom who almost came to blows arguing over who the narrator was, because they didn't realize there were many different narrators.

dustin hoffman was the narrator in the original version that played on tv - but his contract was only for that first broadcast - not sure why - then they had a second guy and no one ever liked that version - which i guess led to the alan thicke version - which probably made the harry nilson fans crazy -

my understanding was they then went to ringo as he was a dear friend of harry nilson (the writer and composer of the point) to have a narrator that more of the original fans would embrace -

No, Donny, these men are nihilists, there's nothing to be afraid of.

I haven't heard the versions narrated by Ringo Starr or Alan Thicke. But I did love the movie and found Dustin Hoffman's narration excellent. After looking for years for this movie on video and then DVD, I finally found a DVD version - but narrated by Ringo Starr. Does anybody know how I could get the version narrated by Dustin Hoffman?

On CD The Point is the Dustin Hoffman. I don't know why they have version with Dustin Hoffman as well. Why Ringo Starr. I wonder the person was a Beatle fan.

Dustin Hoffman was a great fan and friend of Harry Nilsson. In fact when Harry died, Dustin was doing an awards show and when he came out on stage, he asked for a moment of silence to honor Harry.

It would be nice if they released a disc with all three different narrators. I have heard Thicke and Ringo's but I still would like to hear Hoffman. Im thinking of maybe petittioning to Criterion to do this film justice.

I know this is a REALLY old post, but the original vinyl LP and the released CD are narrated by Harry himself, not Dustin Hoffman. Hoffman only did one of the telecasts.

Did you ever find a copy of the original version narrated by Dustin Hoffman? VHS or DVD?

reply

nice version of the movie with Hoffman right now on you tube, not the best resolution , but sound is great

reply

I like the one with Thicke the most.
