Although the action supposedly takes place in room 719 of the Plaza Hotel, in reality it was just a soundstage. The only parts of the movie that were actually filmed at the Plaza were obviously the outside shots. The location filming took place in October 1970, and Mayor Lindsey was actually in attendance.

That is not surprising in the least.
To use a setting in a single room like that would have to be on a stage in a studio. The actual room would have been much much too small to accomodate cameras and film equipment. And for such a long filming period would have disrupted people paying good money to stay at the Plaza.
"Don't let's ask for the moon-we have the stars"
A few years back when the old Plaza was closing for renovations and they were selling everything in the hotel, I specifically went to the seventh floor to look for Suite 719 because I am a HUGE fan of the movie. And sure enough, no suite 719.
