Clint's character was a disk jockey with a fancy house on the beach, filled with original art, an expensive sports car, etc. From what I know, DJs don't make that kind of money — it's a movie, check your logic at the front door.

It's commonplace with mentally ill people who can still function reasonably well to be sent by their families to faraway states and such so the family doesn't have to be involved with them on a regular basis. Evelyn didn't have boundaries, so she would've been demanding her family's time like she ended up demanding Dave's. Still a great movie that's both tragic and funny.

My dad was a DJ. We had a plain 1200 square foot tract house in the suburbs, and a used Buick. No paintings. But it's a movie, and a damned entertaining one.
