It's one of the most faithful adaptations of any book I've ever seen. From the moment during breakfast when Shukhov has a lump of bread with black sugar on it, you know it's going to be a good adaptation. The evocation of a prison camp in wintertime, given the budget they must have had, is extraordinary. I haven't seen it for more than 20 years, but its moments like that are still with me after all this time.
