Is the old VHS widescreen ?????

I'm only asking this as I have other old films which are the original A/R on vhs but are full screen on dvd such as Britannia Hospital and The Cement Garden.
This is very, very annoying when you buy a dvd with the intention of binning the vid copy !!!!!!!
