Was anyone else laughing at that throw at the end of the movie? Matthias was like 50+ feet off the ground and probably about 75-100 yards away at steep angle and he just picks up the spear as after thought and throws it like it's nothing. I thought that was pretty funny.

Mathais was an old man and I got no indication that being a mutant gave them enhanced physical abilities, plus he was a newscaster before the plague so it's doubtful he knew how to use a spear. But he picked up that spear and tossed it like an ancient Greek hero.
Oh well, still a quality movie.
Throwing spears is one of those things in the movies like punching someone in the face.
The movies would have you believe that pretty much anyone can pick up a spear - or knife - for the first time and throw it across a football field and nail someone in the left buttcheek - just like they have you believe that pretty much 100% of the time when someone throws a punch, it nails the intended square in the face.
At least they didn't have him throw the spear UP to the balcony.

It was stupid and could have been fixed by somehow shortening the distance. It's a movie set, after all. What was the director thinking?

shareMatthias and his people didn't use advanced weapons, only rudimentary ones due to their anti-technology philosophy. It would be safe to say its not his first try at using a spear.
He also threw it from a height, which means you really don't need to heft it much to get it going, as gravity does the rest.
Good shot though, another Achilles he is.
i didnt mind the bad guy winning. if you can hit a man with a spear from that distance and height you deserve to win!
shareIf you actually watch the film slowed down, someone DID throw that spear and hit the mannequin standing near the fountain. It was not THAT far away. Mathius was on the 4th floor (the first floor appears to be half sunk). The distance presented for the film was probably no more than 60', and from that height, it isn't that big of a distance considering the further up one is, the further out the spear is allowed to go. The street is two lanes, so 20' max, and how much lawn is there up to the fountain edge, 20-30'?

Oh stop it please. He throws the spear like a crumpled napkin in the garbage bin. The spear even goes sideways if you payed attention. Man I laughed out loud at that scene.

Chuck Heston was your man when sudden death by spear impalement was required. In 'Khartoum' (1966), an Islamic freedom fighter/terrorist (delete as applicable) rather than a deranged photophobic mutant was responsible for the, er, chucking.

I don't know if you read my previous postings, but someone did throw the spear into the mannequin dressed as Neville. If you use frame advance you will see in ONE take, that the person filling in for Mathius throws the spear and strikes the mannequin in the last 3 frames before the edit to the frontal take of Heston being hit with the spear.
After viewing the film back to back with the TCM version to my bluray, the distance is actually less than I noted in my other post. Total distance isn't even 40' as the fountain is right on the edge of the sidewalk.
