One of the best endings to any zombie film

this is definitely going out on a limb, but I dare say that this film has one of the best endings in any zombie film I've seen. Any thoughts?

hm. Are the Templar Knights risen from the dead?
yes.
Do they eat the flesh of the living?
yes.
(ahem)yea, they are zombies.
and are they in a film featuring them?
yea. it's a zombie film.

And I suppose those *two dumbs up* could be awarded to anyone who didn't understand that the knights were on the train when it began to chug along (they dont seem like the type to abandon canned food), and in a sense it doesn't even matter because they had either killed or eaten all of the passengers, thus exposing the trains destination to a zombie attack. The ending spells certain doom for the world, as it suggests that this train basically just brought armageddon in it's passenger cars.

And gory for the sake of being gory? Really, there isn't that much unnecessary violence. Most of the killing was essential to the plot in one way or another. It was used to establish a atmosphere of panic and hoplessness, and I believe it did quite well.

I'm not saying you're wrong for not liking the movie, perhaps you were too hasty to write it off as a sub-par spanish exploitation film, and in that sense I understand where you are coming from. Honestly, I could live without the first.... hour of the film. But the film did an undeniable job of delivering a satisfying zombie scenario.

I just really enjoyed the ending.

(and just curious, what is your favorite zombie film ending?)

I agree that this is quite a good ending - it is pretty obvious that the zombies, (that's right: zombies!) drinking blood because they are in a certain way re-enacting the ritual they performed when they were alive, stayed on the train for the ride and canned food, as sean duders expressed so nicely (brilliant remark!).

It's definitely one of the best I've seen in awhile. The zombies were definitely on the train because it shows a shot of them and the little girl right before it is stopped at the next station.

I loved the setting and mood of the film, and especially for the fact that the main killings took place in broad daylight.

and the newspaper read, "her head was not found"

I say they are zombies despite drinking blood, I've seen a million vampire flicks and played Vampire - The masquerade as pen&paper roleplay on highschool and NEVER heard about vampires to have rotten flesh. I first saw the series when I was 14 I think, it didn't impress me much and I still wonder why they are so popular nowadays. Sure, Spain doesn't offer many good horror flicks and the design of the dead was not as sloppy done as many others were, still I think the series is waaaaaay lame.

Regarding best ending of a zombie flick I consider the end sequence of Zombi 2 aka Zombie aka Zombie Flesh Eaters or whatever it may be called in the USA or UK, here in Germany the title is literally translated "Woodoo- horror island of the zombies" (neat, isn't it). Does "Zomnie" (USA title according to IMDB) suck? Yes. But it delivered some sequences that made it kind of a cult movie here, mostly due to that fact that the movie was completely banned in Germany, but the zombie eats shark sequence and some other fx sequences are quite good for a zombie flick of that time. The end sequence is a shot in which dozens of Zombies march over a bridge in New York towards the city. This doesn't make a very average zombie flick good, but it's memorable as after all the nonsense and badly choreographed action it finally delivers some good images.

Talking about banned, the 3rd part of the series "Ghost Ship of the Bling Dead" was also banned for a very long long time, strangely enough while it was banned it ran on a TV station, heavily cut, but still ran. And in German they are the "riding dead".

And this rounds up todays lesson about point- and useless information about bad horror films ^^

the ending of zombi 2 is exceptionally bad ass too.
I like how the zombie infection, despite being distanced leagues away from the city by the ocean, manages to find its way to a major population and still wipe out humanity.
The originaly poster, which shows the zombies walking on the bridge, really played with my emotions. I saw the poster about 4 years ago, got really excited about a zombie movie taking place in new york, but when I sat down to watch it I am treated with a bunch of italians with bad hair getting eaten on a jungle island by voodoo zombies...
at least the shark fight scene is undeniably bad ass.

reply

I'd call it a tie between ZOMBI and THE BLIND DEAD. In ZOMBI they are walking across the bridge, and our imaginations fill in what will happen when they get to Manhattan. In THE BLIND DEAD the train goes on to its destination, and what will happen when the zombies get off takes place in our imaginations. A tip of the hat to directors who intelligently involve the audience that way.

Bling Dead?
Did they ghost ride the ship?

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

I thought it wasn't a zombie film ??

I have to respectfully disagree. The fact that the guy who left the train to help the girl couldn't just pick her up or drag her was rediculous. Plus, those poor zombies were now miles from home with no where decent to sleep. I was worried about them.

Unless what you were saying is that the story was so horrible that you were thrilled it ended.

Was it a good ending or bad ending? It ended. And it this case, that was enough.

reply

As I'd mentioned before, I thought the movie in general sucked. The ending was the best part because of the apocalyptic atmosphere it proposed. The beauty of the ending is independent from the rest of the movie because everyone is dead or going to die.
It harkens the question; what is the appeal of the zombie movie? Zombies are the catalyst to armageddon, they are society turned against you, they plague the world with their disease. Zombies are your friends and neighbors, zombies are everyone around you. Who wouldn't want to kill their postman sometimes?... and since they're zombies it's ok!
I'm not going to defend this movie to the hilt, but I suppose the ending deserves some sort of recognition. And if you hated this movie so much... why did you IMDB it? meh, whatever...

Its one of my favourite horror endings of all time, hauntingly bleak and a real shocker. However, when the main character emerges from the coal wagon she was hiding in her hair has turned from brown to blonde. Does coal have the opposite effect on hair as it does on skin in this bizarre rotting Templar infested universe?!

I really loved this ending as much as I loved this film. The entire series (though not direct... or even indirect sequals) is good in the respect that alot of the tension created within' the film is a concept of it's atmosphere... and yes... it is remarkably bleak. Invincible blind zombies that carry swords, ride horses and can hear your heart-beat... the concept alone scares the *beep* outta me.

I'll swallow your soul!

Yes, as I recall, nobody gets out of the first film "alive".

I think that the terror of the experience turned her hair white, not blonde. It looked a lot more blonde than white on film, though.

I absolutely loved it. I loved the whole movie. Tombs of the Blind Dead rules.

yeah, definetly a unique little gem out there.

I thought of it as strikingly similar to the photographic montage at the end of Night of the Living Dead; so it didn't seem too awful.

reply

I, also, thought the premise for the ending was pretty badass, but it was filmed pretty crappy. We should of got a shot of the Blind Dead all walking towards the open door of the train then fade to black with some screaming.

reply

I thought it was a great film, especially the slowed down scenes with the Templars riding. However I'd disagree with them being zombies. They look almost like mummies and are much smarter than mindless zombies. I'm sure De Ossorio objected to the zombie title too.

reply

Ossorio apparently insisted that they were mummies too - vampiric mummies.

reply

I really didn't like the ending. It COULD'VE been one of the best, if they had paused on the girl's screaming face as you hear her second scream (as it is in the film) and cut it there, instead of showing you the inside of the train carriage. It was fairly obvious that the Knights were going to be on the train in my opinion and so they needn't have shown it - leave it to the imagination. The lead up to it was awesome, really tense, but then the revealing of it was a bit of a let down.

As some one already said the stll photos at the end of this resemble the ending of Night of the Living Dead which came out a couple of years before this movie. There is no way to know if the director Armando De Ossorio ever saw that one since it had very little release in the first years after it was made.
