This movie was so popular that, as a kid, I think I recall that it was the highest rated TV movie ever made for many years. I'm sure it was surpassed eventually, but I can't remember by what. The TV series that came from it was a bit of a dissappointment, however.

My mom would not let me watch this when it aired. The next morning it seemed as if every kid at school had watched it. I love this movie and it is still scary almost 40 years later.

I know the finale of "M*A*S*H*" was watched by more viewers than any episode of any series ever made, and the last night of the miniseries "Roots" was the highest rated instalment of any miniseries. However, I don't know if there ever was another made-for-tv-movie (certainly not among the 90 minute variety) that beat the record set by "The Night Stalker". Among MFTVM's, it might still be the champ.
