Explanation for what happened to Gail (spoilers, obviously)

I don't understand how the mayor and Claude Akins were able to force Gail to leave without Kolchak at the end. Was she actually a prostitute, but they couldn't say that on TV in 1972 and had to imply it? Or did they kill her? I also don't understand why, if she was simply blackmailed, Kolchak never found her. I know that due to external logic she might have had to be removed because she wasn't going to be a part of the series, but I'm talking about the internal logic of the story and the characters' motivations.

The scene where Kolchak is betrayed in the mayor's office was actually quite saddening to me, by the way, because he lost his best friend and his girlfriend all at once (and I can't stand to see someone humiliated) but it works still because it adds another layer to the story.

If they were going to kill anyone, it would have been Kolchak. No, she was told to get out of town like Kolchak by the Powers That Be. In the novel, the character was called Sam and was a prostitute, but she was not forced out of town like Kolchak. She was changed to a casino employee for tv.

They probably threatened her with false information that she felt might get her in jail. They also possibly threatened her if she ever contacted Carl again. They did not kill her.

I agree about Carl being betrayed. Such a sad scene.
