Help with Ending... (spoilers)

I missed the last part of this movie... can someone help me understand what was going on?

Who was the fiancee really? The dead mother?

What was the son really? Just evil?

What was up with the scene where she drowns the kid? Just a fantasy?

Thanks very much for any help!!!

I'm not surprised you had the same questions I did. The script was so poorly-written that little of it made sense. Nothing is explained, nor do the characters react normally to the odd things going on.

Britt Eklund's character, Elise is Paul's second wife, Marcus' stepmother.

The son really was just evil. He admitted killing his mother and he definitely killed the cat and dog.

The scene where she drowns the boy was just a dream. There were so many dream sequences that it got hard to follow.

I also thought he killed the dog but...

after thinking it over, maybe Elise did it. I mean if Marcus had killed the other dog why did he run to the middle of the road in the ending to save the second dog? In fact that´s why i hated the ending because it was way out of character for the kid, who was just plain evil, to risk his life and dying to save a dog!

How do you like your brandy, sir?
In a glass.

That is a really good point; I hadn't thought of that.

Thanks for the information. I liked the eerie creepy atmosphere of this film, but it left me confused and a bit bored because it was impossible for me to follow the plot.

yeah that was a really weird movie. just watched it as someone posted the whole thing on youtube. glad that chick was hot

I kind of thought Marcus wanted his stepmother to kill his father so they could live together as partners. She pretended to go along with this plan but was tricking him into going into the road to save the dog. That's the way I interpreted it anyway. I may be way off.

I am beginning to believe Marcus throwing stones at the dead dog in the swimming pool foreshadowed his death.

reply

Yes I think it did, too.

I don't think it was all that confusing. Here's how I saw it....

-The movie was a battle of wits between two characters.
-Ekland's character knew the dad loved the son more then her. She wanted the dad all to herself.
-Throughout the movie, it appears the son has the upper hand.
-Ekland's character is playing the son two ways: by playing it dumb and playing on the son's desire for her.
-at the end, she wins.

-During the finale, remember Ekland says "I knew you wanted a dog". Ekland sees the car that is driving haphazardly while the kid really isn't paying attention, b/c he thinks he got Ekland and everything he wanted. Ekland grabs the ball out of the kid's hand and throws it into the road knowing that it's her chance to get the kid out of the picture.

-One piece of irony: The kid says he would've killed her w/ the car. Ekland kills the kid in a car fatality.

One of the themes being explored is: are step-parents as evil as kids perceive them to be and vice versa? Are kids in a step-parent situation as innocent as they appear?
