Effective Bernard Herrmann score. The errie, desperate violins strings and harmonica solos. Though, I haven't seen this film but I have no doubt that Herrmann's music really brings out the psychological trance of the characters.
If you ask me, the music is actually the BEST part of the film. It is very memorable, very good - almost too good for this movie. (Not that it's bad or anything, just that I think the music was deserving of something far greater.)
I've owned the CD of the music for years, and was delighted when TMC ran the movie recently so I could see how it all fit together.
Supposedly, Herrmann tried to exert his authority over the structure of the movie and the script, which didn't go over well with the director or Roald Dahl.
Bernard Herrmann is my favorite film composer. His score adds greatly to the mood. While watching this a few days ago on TCM, I kept thinking how the film would have affected me if there was NO MUSIC?...probably quite boring.
I'm not implying it is a bad film, just that it would take much greater patience on the viewers part to become emotionally involved.
