A very well made movie that went under the radar. I saw it on TCM from the UK and you honestly can't find it in the States. I love the setting, so dark and gloomy adding the gray cloudy skies and rain falling, you have a excellent set. Patricia Neal is an excellent actress and it is great how her husband (Dahl) used Neal's real life experience of a stroke in the storyline even explaining what had happen to here, and if you catch it early in the movie, the treatments used to help stoke victims. Not matter how wrong young Billy is, you almost find yourself understanding why he became the rapist he is. He deperately wants to get away from his demon and Maura tries to help by providing the love he had probably been searching for while he was filling the void and loneliness that Maura had felt. You find yourself happy that Neal's character find was finding the happiness she deserved. I found myself sadden by the ending but it was well worth the time watching this film. I give it a 7.5 out of 10.

I watched this movie for the first time ever on TCM and I'd never heard of it before. As soon as it began I knew it was a film that was well worth watching and neither my wife nor I were disappointed.

I wonder how many other classic gems like this are out there waiting to be discovered?

The white Mini that the nurse drove brought back memories too as a cousin of mine owned exactly the same model and colour at that time.

I just now finished the novel this was adapted from and it was absolutely wonderful....I'm trying to see if I can get TCM to tape me a copy to purchase since it's obvious after 18 years, it is never going to be shown in the States again. I hate that they show the same crap over and over but hidden gems like this fall into obscurity.

Quick question....since it's been close to two decades since I caught the end of this.....if memory serves me, didn't Billy die at the end of the movie? I thought he drove his motorbike off the road over a cliff or am I dreaming?

and the realization that she knew that he's a rapist/murderer.

I think it was only through Maura that Billy realised he was SICK - or just HOW sick he was. (On a symbolic level, it was no coincidence that Maura worked with handicapped people.) And with her by his side, he wanted to heal - maybe he even thought he was "cured".

And so, as I understood the final scene, it was the realisation that he was NOT cured - that, no matter how much he tried, he could not help himself, so he would forever keep hurting (maybe even killing) Maura and himself - what he couldn't stand.

I loved his pained expression at that point.
(Maura's, too. Well, except the mouthing part.)

What was the name of the novel this film was adapted from? I'd love to read it!

After some research I found out the novel is "Nest From a Falling Tree" by Joy Cowley.
