The superb 1992 anime film was almost certainly inspired by this movie. The similarities are beyond coincidence. Even some of the ariel photography is emulated in Porco Rosso. Both are great films though ;-)

Uncanny - I just saw some 10 minutes of that film on TV. I didn't make the connection you are making, but it's there I suppose!

I just thought it was a pretty hard stuff coming as it did on the telly middle of a day.
