Excellent Flying Filming

The way they followed Murphy's plane on his path to vengeance, I must say was filmed in a impressive way. In no shot could you tell their was a another plane/copter following.

Yes, it was very well done, especially for a '71 flick. Their was no evidence of a secondairy 'filming' aircraft, and the flying scenes were just a treat.

I agree. The flying scenes are pure adrenaline. Great action sequences.

How can you trust a man that wears both a belt and suspenders? Man can't even trust his own pants.

reply

Yes some of the filming was well done with the little aircafts engine cutting in and out.

That first take off sequence is a full 3 minutes long, i was gripping my chair and gritting my teeth! Absolutely fantastic bit of film and what a machine that is pounding through the waves, the sheets of water being thrown back through the prop. Absolutely stunning!

I agree whole-heartedly, it's a great sequence and I loved the scene straight afterwards where a very excited O'Toole enthuses "Louie, Louie! Th FEELING!" And you know exactly what he means! It conveys that 'feeling' perfectly.
I think overall it's a gem of a film, very atmospheric and sadly ignored for too long.

Feel the same way, glad i decided to watch it when it was on tv yesterday.

Yup. There's something about an open cockpit biplane. I was fortunate to go up in a Stearman (like the yellow plane used in the The English Patient) for some aerobatics. Loops, split-esses, barrel rolls, hammerhead stalls, Immelmanns, spins, snap rolls, the works. You're not tossed about, but stationary inside a spinning hollow ball with the ground on one side and the sky on the other. Except that one moment, you can be hanging only by your shoulder straps looking "up" and 2,000 feet "above" is the ground sliding past. Unforgetable!

I agree, the Second Unit stuff is great. You must also remember this is a Peter Yates film, the director of "Bullit" which still has the best car chases ever shot.
