DVD ?

When will a DVD version be avaible ? Has somebody an information ?

reply

This will never be available on DVD to my knowledge. None of John Waters older work is available on DVD, only VHS.

reply

Pink Flamingos and Desperate living are on DVD. The only ones I haven't been able to find on DVD are Multiple Maniacs, his short films, and Cry Baby. Everything else is available. Although for the life of me I don't know why Cry Baby isn't on DVD.

I have Female Trouble on DVD. It has deleted scenes restored and its AWESOME

You can't go on blaming yourself forever. Just blame yourself once, then move on.

"It is not a secret that John Waters hate the DVD media."

Then why does he do commentary tracks? Do the distributors blackmail him or something?

If he still truly felt that way, he wouldn't do the commentary tracks and wouldn't endorse the DVDs at all.

reply

John Waters DVDs are worth it, if only for the commentary. I have the DVD of Serial Mom (tame for Waters, I know), and I swear Waters's commentary is funnier than the movie (and the movie's not bad).

reply

A special directors cut of Cry-Baby is coming out in a few weeks. As far as I know, I've only seen his older stuff (like Multiple Maniacs and Mondo Trasho) on VHS.

Wing sings the Carpenters!!!! Wow, it just keeps getting better!

In the book john waters released a few months back(the hairspray, female trouble and multiple manics scripts) he says that he wants multiple manics to come out on dvd and that the studio are ones holding it back.. that if u want it, to write to new line (i think thats the studio that owns it) he also said the same thing at a his past christmas show at ucla when someone in the audience asked him about a dvd..

It is a shame that the VHS is such a dying art form. Nothing like a warm, worn VHS tape of a movie you love. John Water's movies are just so VHS compatable! While special features can be great, a VHS is just more intimate - it's almost like going on a date with your favorite movie -

"No baby, we don't need no interactive menus - let's just cuddle"

reply

Ummm Cry Baby, Ed Wood, and Wild At Heart are all out on dvd...

I met John Waters 2 years ago at the Dirty Shame premiere and he told me that he was working on the DVD release of Multiple Maniacs. Apparently the studio is holding back the release because it hasn't seen the light of day yet. Mr. Waters also told me that there would never be a DVD release for Mondo Trasho because of all the music included in the movie; it would be too expensive to get the rights to rerelease it. He also said that he was working on a CD that will include the Female Trouble and Polyester soundtracks. What a great idea! It is not out yet but I keep my fingers crossed!

reply

I would adore to have the opening music to "Female Trouble"! Even though "Multiple Maniacs" isn't on an offical DVD as of yet, there is a bootleg available here: www.lostsilver.com and of course the VHS' floating about.

reply

The people at our rare video rental store say that both Mondo Trasho and Multiple Maniacs are out of print (on VHS) and they probably won't be released onto DVD because of the music rights thing. I bought both VHS on eBay, and I think people sell them on Amazon. I wouldn't wait around for the DVD if you can find a VHS copy. Most of John Waters's newer works like Polyester, Pink Flamingos, Desperate Living, Hairspray, Serial Mom, Cry Baby etc are all on DVD that I have seen.

reply

Luckily, I found unofficial DVDs of 'Mondo' and 'Maniacs'.

For 'Mondo', it obviously won't get an official release because the amount of money the studio would have to pay for the music rights would be astronomical.

Apparently, John has said at one point that 'Maniacs' hasn't been released because, as someone said earlier, the studio is holding it back. Reportedly, the studio is doing so because of censorship problems (Religious material in 'Maniacs' or something - I haven't watched it yet, so I dunno)

Uh...yah...I could see that - Divine getting sodomized in church with a rosary crosscut with the crucifixion of Jesus? Yah. Might get on some people's bad sides.

reply

I would kill for the MM dvd and Mondo Trasho. I know they have not been officially released but someone tell me where are the bootleg copies are?

i wonder if john would be able to release the older works if he just released mondo and eat your make up (etc) without audio.. just the movie and of course extras like commentary... Maybe include on the jacket the songs used (and the track times) so that his fans can make an unoffical cd.. or maybe just make a deal with the record companies for a 'eat your make up soundtrack' where in order to hear the song snippets, you had to buy the cd seperate, and just let the record companys keep the profit and split it equally to make amends... .. i just really wish those old old ones, his shorts, were available... too bad he just doesnt forget to lock the door 'wink' 'wink' and oops somebody stole and made copys.. my bad..

reply

I believe the issue with some of the shorts is that Waters himself is concerned about the quality of the films. He mentioned that he still has an 8mm print of "Hag in a Black Leather Jacket" which he hasn't even played recently because he is unsure of how the print would hold up on playback.

I think John can release MONDO TRASHO without the original soundtrack. Either show it completely silent or place a BRAND NEW MUSIC SOUNDTRACK to keep costs down? Plus I would watch the MONDO TRASHO with just a JOHN WATERS commentary.

reply

I don't know - I just couldn't watch Mary Vivian Pearce get run over without the Shangri-Las moaning "OH NO - OH NO - OH NO NO NO NO NO..."

I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked.
