Should be watched once with the subtitles on..

I decided to watch this film tonight with the subtitles on and I was surprised to see that a number of the background conversations were included (from the dining hall and beach scenes) which to the ear are at times almost inaudible to hear (or spoken in foreign languages). It was all pretty mundane stuff but interesting I thought nonetheless.

Originally the foreign languages were NOT supposed to have a subtitle. In the book the foreign talk was what he could not understand was pretty "like music"

I was wondering about this! My version of the film didn't subtitle any of the non-English dialogue which I found frustrating. I kept feeling like I was missing out on something, even if it was just mundane conversation. I mean they went through the trouble of mic-ing the actors, so I figured what they were saying must have some importance!
