The Polish family in Venice

In the later part of the film Von Aschenbach follows Tadzio and his family through the back streets of Venice, always trying to keep Tadzio in view. What the film doesn't explain (or have I missed it?) is what the family were doing there at all? Were they going to some secret rendezvous, perhaps? It certainly does not appear to be a sightseeing tour around Venice. Anyone have any ideas?

Those weren’t back streets, those were typical streets of Venice. If you’ve never been there, you may think of Venice as just Piazza San Marco (St. Mark Square), which appears in just about every movie located in Venice (including this one, briefly).

But there is a lot more to Venice than Piazza San Marco. There are those streets winding through the city, with numerous bridges to cross. While it has been several decades since I spent a week in Venice, those streets are what I remember most because the only way to get from anywhere to anywhere else in Venice was to either take a ship ride on the Grand Canal or walk through those winding streets. And walking was much more interesting than taking a ship.
