Definitely a great and very entertaining movie, also a great start into Cassavetes work in my opinion, being more accessible than his other movies. But Cassavetes did better films, check out FACES and HUSBANDS for example, these are real masterpieces!

It's incredible if you think I saw this film just once over thirty years ago! I absolutely loved it and keep promising myself to see it again.

I saw this movie today and I enjoyed it. This is the first Cassavetes film I've seen.

Dear crmoyd,

Nice to hear that you've enjoyed it. It's probably the most accessible one together with GLORIA so it was a good choice to start. Please have a look at FACES and A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE if you're intrested in watching more of his work. After that, HUSBANDS and OPENING NIGHT are also great but even more difficult to get into, so I suggest to watch some others before getting to these ones.

Anyway, I hope you'll become a Cassavetes-fan too, truly one of the most underapppreciated American directors!

Cheers from Switzerland
David

this was very good...good for getting into Cassavetes. personally i think his greatest film is Shadows (along with The Killing of a Chinese Bookie and Opening Night)...

I have to be honest. Films like this make me cringe. Sure, the acting is superb. Gena has always been one of my favorites. However, this couple would never make it in the real world. I'm tired of fantastic women being coupled with weird men. Even Seymour's mother who is screwed up knows this match is doomed.

reply

I agree, it's a masterpiece!

so you've never seen an amazing woman with a loser? Get real and open your eyes.

Whoever said the couple would make it?

You are right about that.

Noufa is right. Good point.

Cassavetes is one of the all-time best and this is a film that even Cassavetes-haters should enjoy. Rowlands and Cassell should have been nominated.

reply

Agree, I just saw the last ten minutes of this movie on TV, I knew this one is absolutely a masterpiece.

Somebody please upload Zelmo's breakdown onto YouTube, please.

I liked HUSBANDS a lot, I don't know why. I didn't very much like GLORIA. Where would this movie fall between those two extremes of accessibility?

I'll watch it tomorrow, after I've finished, ahem, "acquiring it."

One of my all time faves.

Me too! Normally I avoid romantic comedies like the plague, but "M and M" for me is a 5-dimensional hit; okay, the couple seem an unlikely match, and the continuity is a bit odd, but what a story! At times I thought I was watching real life.
