The snow was NOT fake

The entire thread with fools commenting on the fake snow is pretty hilarious, considering that the snowfall on McCabe is real, and famously so. There was a bit of snow padding on the ground in some scenes, but minimal. Altman filmed the final "chase" sequence during blizzard-like conditions that lasted nearly 9 days.

The "fake snow" that people refer to is not the snow on the ground, but the optical that was used to make it look like it was snowing for some shots (Altman on the commentary: "some of that snow in the foreground is laid over"), the same optical showing snow falling diagonally across the screen, always in the same direction, downward from left to right, regardless of the direction of the shot and the camera movement, always at the same rate whether it's a long shot or a medium shot.
