Influence on Wicker Man

Anyone else think that the atmosphere of 'The Wicker Man' (the original, not the appalling Nic Cage remake) owes something to 'Malpertuis'. I am thinking especially of the exterior scenes e.g. the masque street scenes. Kumel's films seem to have a strong sense of place (true also of 'Daughters of Darkness' and 'Der Komst van Joachim Stiller') and are filmed in some cases in an almost documentary style with what appear to be locals (rather than actors). This reminds me of several key exterior scenes (e.g. the arrival harbour scene and the hunt for Rowan scenes) in TWM.
