Why one actress for 3 characters?

I watched the extras on the DVD expecting to hear some reason beyond the novelty of it but failed to catch it if there was one. Anybody got a clue?

Three and a half years since you asked this question and still no clue.
For effective use of the multiple role gimmick in a film, I'd say you can't do better than Miranda Richardson in Cronenberg's "Spider."

Lower budget, maybe. Cheaper to pay one actress than three. :)
