Fulci could actually direct!

Just saw Lizard for the first time. Great, great film. How can someone who pays this much detail to the art of film editing and mise-en-scene make amateurish crap like Zombi 2 and The New York Ripper. I do like those films but Lizard is a proper, professional film. What a waste of talent! I've just bought Don't Torture a Duckling in the hope that it is as well made as Lizard...

Lizard in a Woman's Skin is the finest giallo I've seen, better than anything Argento or Bava has ever done.

I recommend the film highly, especially to fans of Morricone.

I wasn't really into the movie. I didn't think it was bad, but I just wasn't that into it.

Gotta disagree with your comment on Argento. I like Bava, but I'm not a huge fan. But Dario has done some wonderful work.

Yeah, Fulci could be good but he also did a mountain of dreck. Duckling is better than Lizard in my opinion, it moves faster and it might be his best "Professional" film that I've seen. My personal favorite would have to be City of the Living Dead, however, there's just something about that one, its just unrelentingly nasty and ugly. The polar opposite of Lizard.
His earlier films I heard showed a lot of promise of a very talented director.

Hey that's exactly what i thought, new york ripper had that same unrelenting nastiness too i felt, god it is funny how conflicting people's opinions are with fulci films, most people love the beyond, but i always thought that it was just average, now people on this board are saying lizard was his best, but i thought the Psychic was better than lizard, i think what causes this is that it's so hard to compare fulci movies with other fulci movies, his overall body of work is so diverse, he made giallo movies like lizard, gorefests like the beyond, he had that conan-esque movie Conquest which i liked, and then he made total shlock crap like murder rock and demonia, hahaha, what a wild ride

although if there was a vote between fulci and argento, i would pick argento hands down, much more consistent, and what i feel are his two best films; suspiria and bird with the crystal plumage represent a refined quality of filmmaking that i dont feel fulci ever reached, but luckily i dont have to choose only one and can continue to enjoy both

I've been surprised by how many Fulci films I've found to be very well made. Even his early stuff like "Perversion Story" stood out as a pretty well made film. However, I notice that other people seem to differ in their opinions when it comes to his best and worst.
I loved "The NY Ripper" and yet everyone I watch it with seem to not be too impressed. After seeing that I picked up "Don't Torture A Duckling" which people told me was his best and superior to "NY RIPPER" and I didn't agree.
Same thing for "Zombie" people either love it or say it's over rated.
"The Beyond" was great so I'm on board there. Anyway, I dunno why people seem to create a competition between Fulci and Argento, simply because they are both Italian Horror directors. I'll admit Argento's work seems more consistent but Fulci as certainly made some great films.

While this is a fine film in its own right, it doesn't really stand out from the other gialli of the early 70s, especially the ones by Sergio Martino. Don't Torture a Duckling is superior to this one and many of Fulci's late 70s and early 80s horrors are more enjoyable to me than Lizard.

I said "look, man, I don't take my clothes off for RIP CAGE, even if it is artistic!"

I've seen all his films (with dvd releases) and this one is by far his worst.

The story is so terrible, with it's ridiculously lame twists.
You'll stop caring after 30 minutes and by the end, you're just glad it's over.

I know this is all a matter of opinion, but if you think "Lizard" is worse than "Daemonia", "Sodoma's Ghost" and "Aenigma", you're smoking crack.

reply

Of course he could, silly
This is one of his best films! A very well directed giallo.
May I also recommend to you Seven Notes in Black (1977). His masterpiece in my opinion. It's very similar to this one.

And by the way, did you see Don't Torture a Duckling after all?

reply

I was thinking the same damn thing myself. Where was this guy when I was watching House by the Cemetery? I'm glad I didn't see this film first or I'd be majorly p!ssed off at Fulci. This film's great.

The Beyond shows him to bea really amazing director.... if not, of course, Argento.

Well, I don't think Fulci could... I've saw several of his most famous works, and, no, Fulci could not direct (and should not). Plot, acting, camera work, dream sequences, music - all are terrible here. There are some not bad giallos out there (Pensione paura), but definitely not this one.

I always thought that Fulci was a good director, but his writting wasn't nearly as impressive.

reply

It is great. Fulci's name is associated with Extreme Gore Cheese and excessiveness, this film was such a surprise.
