'Here Comes the Cake!'

"There was this enormous cake that was terrorizing England - devil's food cake. And it would ooze into the windows and into the doors and engulf the people. It'd eat everything in its way. It was travelling down the coast from Scotland, and whenever it would come to a town or a village, it would call out, "Here comes the cake! Here comes the cake!" BBC sent out an emergency [broadcast warning everyone not to open] their doors [to the cake or else it would engulf them.] This old lady hears [something outside,] and she's got her ear to the door, and she says, "Who's there? Who's there?" And a voice comes back, "It's not the cake!""

IMO, Emily was the cake.

Memory says, I did that. Pride replies, I could not have done that. Eventually, memory yields.

reply

Metaphorically, maybe. She did devour everyone in the countryside. But she didn't announce her arrival.

Aaaahahahaha! Thank you for posting!!! My roommate & I are always quoting that, but we never knew the whole story!

reply

It was a little difficult, since some of the story is obscured by the voiceover of Jessica's inner thoughts. I reconstructed it as best I could.

Funny - I wanna say that I've heard a variation on the story in some other film over the years, obviously based on this one, but there's no chance of my recalling where I heard it. Didn't have much luck searching on the internet, either.

I thought her story sounded vaguely familiar too, and hoped I'd remember the other version I'd heard as she continued in the telling. But I never did. I'd appreciate it very much if you let me know, if you find out.

It may have been in a book of urban legends I was reading back in the late 90's. But fat chance of me ever finding which one that was.

Hahaha, thank you for posting this. I'd almost forgotten this total gem of knowledge! (An enormous cake terrorizing England? BRILLIANT. Would watch that movie in a heartbeat.)

reply

More probably an enormous pudding terrorizing England.

I think that the fact that a cake was talking alone is terrifying without the thought of it eating people.

Come, fly the teeth of the wind. Share my wings.

I'm surprised there isn't already a film like that.

Yes, instead of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes it can be Attack of the Killer Cake. I picture it being like The Blob only with a giant cake that devours people.

Death lives in the Vault of Horror!

Speaking of The Vault of Horror (1973), I sure wish they'd put out an uncut widescreen edition!

I never understood it, and I do not get the punch line. Why is "It's not the cake" so funny? What am I missing?

Because it's the cake, lying, to get them to open the door.

OK, thank you. I love that movie so much, and I wanted to understand everything. Thanks again.

I remember, back in the 1970s, seeing a collection of animated films on PBS. One of the films was about a giant cake that went on a rampage! Whenever I get to this scene in LSJTD, I am reminded of that animated film.

reply

You wouldn't happen to remember anything about it, would you? Any clue that might help find it?

There's a Monty Python episode in which puddings from outer space invade England and turn people into puddings as well. In the end, the future of mankind is decided by a tennis match.

I remember it. 

Although, they were blancmanges (is that a pudding?), and they were turning people into Scotsmen. 
