it's not on the level of le mans or grand prix but, Hot Rod, 1979 ,made tv movie isn't to bad also the crappy days of thunder or driven . these are not racing movies gumball rally, cannonball run ,vanishing point, two lane black -top ,bullit but are for people that like to see cars racing and going fast !

Though I've never seen all of it, "Winning" with Paul Newman is supposed to be pretty good.

Two Lane Blacktop. great gear head movie. don't expect much dialog.

Super Speedway centers around the Andretti clan and CART racing. The camera work and sound on the DVD is jaw-dropping.

reply

Considering Super Speedway is not fictional like all others listed, what about Dust to Glory, the one about the 2003 Baja 1000 race, like Super Speedway, it features an Andretti

GREAT docu. on MotoGP: "Faster" and the sequel: "Faster and Faster" are great chronicals of the switch from 2 stroke to 4 stroke, and rossi's switch to yamaha.

Some were kind of hokey but I love racing movies like:

The Crowd Roars - James Cagney
Indianapolis Speedway - Pat O'Brien
The Big Wheel - Mickey Rooney
Speed (1936) - James Stewart
The Fast and The Furious (1955) - John Ireland
The Racers - Kirk Douglas
Johnny Dark - Tony Curtis
The Lively Set - James Darrin
Winning - Paul Newman
Grand Prix - James Garner
Greased Lightning - Richard Pryor

These were racing movies. Not hot rod or drifting movies. I'm sure I've missed a few but these are films I own or want to add to my collection. Two I purposely left out are:

Driven - Sylvester Stallone
Days of Thunder - Tom Cruise

I didn't want anyone to think I forgot them. They're not like the other bad ones above. They are dismal movies made by people that should have done better. Driven is too horrible to list all its many faults. Days of Thunder is just plain embarrassing. I'm not a fan of NASCAR but I respect what the drivers and crews do. That movie makes them look like morons.

Although I've yet to see it, 'Vanishing Point' was rated as the most favoured by a car nut/movie critic recently.

Bobby Deerfield must be the worst of the worst. An excellent film with racing as a background element is the French A Man and A Woman. Once Upon a Wheel is a semi-documentary Newman produced. Not great but interesting.

What about Talladega Nights?

How about Elvis racing in Viva Las Vegas?

Uh...Fred Astaire racing the Ferrari in the last Aussie GP in On The Beach?

Speed Racer?

Uhhh, I'm through now. Sorry.

There are other great *car*-movies (Bullitt, Mad Max 1&2, even the hippie-trippy Vanishing Point), but sadly I have yet to find a *racing*-movie that's in the same league as Grand Prix or Le Mans.

I've tried "Winning", but found it pretty unwatchable.

If you can find it, "The Green Helmet" has some good racing.

What I had in mind was boxing the compass.

Yes, from 1965. I concur. Not great, perhaps, but entertaining. I always enjoy watching it.
