Would love a TRUE widescreen or stills or any memorabilia from this film

I'm a literature and film professor and this is one of my favorite films. Yes, that will shock many of you (and probably cause many of you to laugh at me), but I hope it makes at least a few of you take a close look at this film that piles on the moral challenges until the engaged viewer finds himself or herself screaming in strangled agony, yet an agony flush with joy over a film that forces a viewer to consistently re-evaluate his/her entire ethical system--while at the same time delivering untouchable performances, particularly from Burt Lancaster, Robert Ryan, and Sheree North.

So I got the widescreen version of the video. The ultimate ripoff! It wasn't widescreen, they just cut the top and bottom off of the TV version! So if anyone has a true widescreen, please let me know (video, not DVD; my college pays poo). Secondly, I would love any stills or any memorabilia from this film. Please contact me at [email protected]. Thanks!

I never heard of a movie that was marketed as wide screen that wasn't. I have this movie on DVD and it is wide screen. It is not currently available on VHS.

Igby Goes Down, the "widescreen" version, is an amputated version of the full-screen version. I have both the DVD and VHS, and there are some plot points compromised by what's cut off the bottom.

I suspect that Lawman was shot in 4:3 ratio, as were many films of the era.

This is an amazingly good western, it's a minor tragedy it's not recognized as a classic. One of the best casts ever assembled for this kind of film, and an incredibly strong script.

It's one of my favourite movies of all time, probably my favourite western. The only thing to touch it is the recent Australian "Western" (whose name escapes me right now, something like "Covenant" I think).

Did you find a decent copy?

I'm looking for one, so any advice would be appreciated

I agree with everything you say. This is an undiscovered western masterpiece housed by some of the greatest ever screen actors. Sadly, when I try to get fellow western fans to watch it they are turned off straight away because it was directed by Winner. A damm pity, as they are missing a treat. Lancaster and Ryan are endlessly watchable.

[In other words, you won't ever find a better print of LAWMAN than the MGM DVD, because it looks the way director Michael Winner WANTED you to see it in theaters.]

This is fascinating. I wasn't aware of matted widescreen. Just watched the movie on Hulu by the way, and it's great -- except for the damned commercials.
