ANOTHER WORTHLESS TOWN MARSHAL NAMED "COTTON"

While watching this film the other day, I remembered another corrupt town marshal named Cotton, from Gunfight at the OK Corral. Does Robert Ryan's character name constitute a "tip of the hat" to Lancaster's previous hit Western? Your non-trollish thoughts are welcome.
