Duane's Depressed

The Last Picture Show is the book that got me absolutely hooked on Larry McMurtry. I'm currently in the middle of Duane's Depressed and was wondering if there were any plans or even a rumor that it might be made into a movie as well? I read all of Texasville not even knowing there was a movie, when I saw it at Blockbuster I completely freaked out.

Texasville the movie isn't very good. I loved the book, however and laugh and laugh
whenever I read it. I have Duane's Depressed and didn't like it as much. I have
heard a rumor that it is going to be made into a film, but it may just be a rumor.

I totally agree - Texasville the movie was beyond horrid but the book was one of my top 5 by far. Ironically, I did not enjoy The Last Picture Show (the book) as much as I did the film. Duane's Depressed left me a little depressed - what was Larry McMurtry thinking when he killed Karla?? I'm afraid a film based on that book would be a little flat since there are not any high points.

Just watched a screening of Last Picture Show in Archer City as part of a traveling road show screening films where they were filmed.

Good for you ! I bet that was something. I went to see it as a double feature
in Wichita when Texasville was released. I live about 40 miles away from Archer
City in Graham.

Dwayne's Depressed is a great book. Apparently all three are out of print now (in the UK anyway) and can only be obtained second hand through Amazon etc.

Goodbye Mr Fish...he's waving!

I do hope that's made into a film soon.

BTW, initially I was annoyed that the stories kept focusing on Duane, but it all makes sense: a man asserting his independence from his town (Texasville) and eventually, his family (Duane's Depressed).

I saw an interview with Jeff Bridges where he briefly talked about the book and hoping that they could make it in to a movie, so hopefully!

There's also a fourth book when the light goes out.

I enjoyed "Texasville" the book and the movie, despite the movie's unfavorable reviews. I wonder if that's why "Duane's Depressed" was never made into a film. Jeff Bridges and Annie Potts would be the perfect ages now to play Duane and Karla as they were in "Depressed."

Unfortunately, Timothy Bottoms would be left to a cameo, and Cybill Shepherd wouldn't be involved at all.

Cloris Leachman isn't getting any younger either, so I hope they hurry if they plan to ever do this.

Currently I am 3/4 of the way into "Duane's Depressed." It's a good book but may or may not make a good movie. There's so much inner monologue from Duane that one way they could film it would be to make Ruth Popper's role bigger so she could be a sounding board.

Randy Quaid as Lester Marlow would be a character like that doltish cousin he played in the "Vacation" movies.

I enjoyed the books and won't give away any spoilers, but the storyline got more depressing in this, and the next sequel McMurtry wrote afterward.

ALSO: McMurtry's second Danny Deck novel "Some Can Whistle" was supposed to be a "dramedy," yet had the body count of a "Friday the 13th" movie at the end.

Having read the entire arc, from The Last Picture Show to Rhino Ranch, I have to say that Texasville was my least favorite book(the movie sucked even more.)
I moved on to DD, WTLG and RR and I'm so glad I did, having really felt for Duane as I made my way through.
Highly recommended.

I saw last picture show and it took my breath away. Finally a movie about boys growing up and bleak town. Well I was excited that there was a sequel called Texasville. Well I disappointed to say the least. If you haven’t seen this movie, take my word pass on it.
