Chinchurro (aka the outtakes of 'The Last Movie' edited for tv)

So I'm not sure if anyone else has come across this interview, but there's an article/interview the August 1983 issue of High Times with Dennis Hopper focusing mainly on Out of the Blue. They also talk quite a bit on The Last Movie, saying something I found to be pretty interesting and want to know more about:

"...The thing is, a year later they call-the vice-president calls - and says, 'Listen, you know the outtakes that you have? What do you think about owning fifty percent of a television show, huh? Let us cut it, right? We make a TV show, you own fifty percent of it.' And I said, '*beep* you.' They said, 'No, no. Think about it, think about it.' I said, '*beep* YOU, man.' He said, 'I'm callin' you back tomorrow.'

Anyway, I got drunk that night, man; I had a bottle of scotch, I sat alone in my house - and you know what I'll ask for, man? I'll ask for the negative. I'll ask for my cut of the film. I'll ask for all the prints they made of it! Yeah? And I'll let them use the outtakes, but I get the outtakes back. They can make their show and it can't be called "The Last Movie" [Later it would be called "Chinchurro"]. Well, those are impossible things to ask for, man. I said this to the vice-president when he called the next day and he said 'I think that can be arranged, have your lawyers call-'"

Hopper later goes onto say:

"They put this thing- "Chinchurro" - out at theree in the morning in Las Vegas, Nevada, wherever. It's not 'A film by Dennis Hopper' but it's got to be starring Dennis Hopper. I'd like to see the *beep* thing. See what the *beep* they did with it-"

This little anecdote explains how Hopper got the rights to a studio picture, but it leaves something to be asked. My question is....has anyone seen "Chinchurro" or have any more info on it? I'm sure it's impossible to find now.

Thanks!

I can vaguely recall a gray-market video company in the early nineties, I want to say, advertizing a film they called "Chinchero" and attributed to Sam Fuller. "The movie they said didn't exist," I remember being in their blurb. If you're interested I can tell you the name of the outfit, but I'm not sure if they're in business anymore.

Hi,

Yes, please do! It might help me track it down.

Thanks,

Also, I just read on Hopper's website that this version is called "Chinchero". Different spelling than what was written in the article, so the plot thickens.

That company was Video Search of Miami, or VSoM. I haven't done business with them since the VHS days, but I know they were active into DVD and at one time anyway had a Web presence. Good luck, and hope you find the film!

I don't know anything about the outtakes, but Chinchero was an alternate title for The Last Movie. It's the name of a pretty little village in the Sacred Valley, in between Cusco and Machu Picchu. In the film you can see a couple of Chinchero's famous landmarks: the terraces carved into the hillside that the Inkas used for farming, and the giant boulder with the narrow tunnel cut through it.

If any of that actually happened there'd be three dozen long articles about it on the internet by now. There aren't, it didn't.
