There's a wonderful sequence in this movie...

...where Matthau's character speaks French in a Mexican restaurant, German in an Italian restaurant, and then Spanish in a Swiss restaurant. Hilarious.

It's when he's in Palm Springs with Erica, and the waiters bring him his food. In the Mexican restaurant he says "Merci beaucoup", in the Italian restaurant he says "Danke schoen", and then in the Swiss restaurant (after the ride on the tram) he says "Muchas gracias". I might have the sequence out of order, but if you're paying attention, it can be quite funny.

I now recollect those scenes. I remember each quote but didn't take notice opposition of foreign languages with different foreign restaurants. This movie is dense with subtle humor and sentiment, giving a intelligent but simple analysis on human aging and family. just brilliant. I cried and laughed the whole time. I am "Kotch", feeling a bit out sync with current generation, lonely, loquaciious, full of useless information with no one interested in your experiences anymore. Its what happens when you've lived a lot then find youself with too much time on your hands. Your mind is full of memories and facts that compulsively flow out your mouth. Lemmon and Mathuau show genius as director and actor to reveal the poignancy and comedy of everyday human experiences. Debra was good, what else has she done?
