SPOILER!!! Why didn't Kotch. . .

. . .simply tell gas station employees that Erica was going into labor and needed medical assistance when he pulled into station, rather than go through long drawn-out production of escorting her to women's restroom, going back for key, etc.? And whoever heard of an electronic buzzer in any restroom (let alone a filthy gas station lavatory situated on a remote mountain road) that allows patrons to signal for assistance? A ridiculous plot contrivance in an otherwise engrossing little movie (even though the ingratiating Walter Matthau never looked anywhere near as old as the 70-plus he was supposed to be).

I totally agree with you on both points. I thought the movie was pretty good up until that ludicrous gas station scenario you have described. It was so badly done, I literally squirmed in my seat it was so stupid. And as for Matthau not looking his age, true dat: he definitely looked like a "younger" Walter Matthau made up to look like an old codger. Still a pretty decent movie, though. Nice little time capsule of the early 70's.
