How would this be different today

I know it takes away from the point of the film but someone savvy to modern tech tell me how different it would be if Joe for example came back from Iraq. I know we have implants for the deaf. But I know little more than that.

Mother Juggs and speed, is it mother Juggs and speed?

if this happened today,

1. everyone would know about it... everyone.

2. there would "probably" be a big debate between pro-euthanization and idiots.

3. they would have a news special on it.

4. obama would go down to that hospital and personally put a bullet in that guys head. ( his motives will be a mixture of pity, respect, and frustration.)

5. everyone will eventually forget about it.

i think thats pretty accurate.

"dont see em' again til' the fourth of july!"

reply

I think you're full of *beep* There are lots of totally messed up guys living in hospitals and nursing homes from wars. I'll give you a pass on #5, however.

He'd be homeless.

if he didnt have health care he would be booted out of the hospital as as fast as he was put in.

there would be a movie of the week about him
the clucking hens on the view and the talk would be all over the show acting like they know them personalty.

that church that protests EVERYTHING would be protesting outside his window lol

look how fast the main stream media forgot about the oil spill in the golf, took about 4 months for them to move on.

I KNOW 2 things that are clear.I'm a great sinner,Christ is a great Savior.

He'd get artificial limbs and win a marathon.

and then kill his supermodel girlfriend

The VA would lose all of his paperwork and claim that he does not exist and furthermore has never served in the military. After several years of fighting with the VA, they will find his paperwork but then deny his claim stating that his injuries were not related to his time in service. After finally saving up enough money for a lawyer, the trial begins and Joe dies at the age 45.

If it happened today it would be a little more merciful because everyone would know.
He is being kept alive by artificial methods and a feeding tube. Once it was determined he was of "sound Mind" than he would likely get his wishes to remove the feeding tube.... Hopefully with some drugs to make the time pass easier..
There would, of course, be a lot of senseless debate about euthanasia and the extreme right to lifers would be heartless with their one track aim to keep him alive. But they would not succeed.
That doesn't lessen the horror of how those most affected in the most extreme ways are still not considered by those that create the need for wars in the first place.

This amazing chain of replies serves to make quite plain what a fine, serviceable flick this is.

With the extent of Joe's injuries, there's nothing medical science could do, even today, to restore the functions he's lost. I said in a different thread, all they could do medically would be to do a face transplant for cosmetic purposes. What WOULD be different today is that an American has a legal right to ask that all artificial life sustenance be removed to bring the end of his life. The USSC ruled on that a long time ago. If the patient can communicate and show he understands and can convey his wishes, legally, he would have the right to terminate all life-sustaining measures. Physicians today are a lot more open to the idea of allowing a patient with poor quality of life the right to select suspension of treatment, but it's possible there could be one who would obstruct the patient's wishes.

There'd be lots of very, very loud music and CGI explosions filling the screen, and then people would say it's as "good" as Mad Max: Fury Road.
