Hi there, I played a wobbley. I carried Joe Hill's casket, and had a few little parts, I was basically an extra. I stood on a box and recited "I stand on this box, to get back my right to stand on this box!"

Mostly I want this movie so I can prove to my wife that I was thin at one point in my life! :) Please let me know if you find anything about buying the one by Bo Widerberg, and I will do the same!

I did get a copy from the University of Utah of Joe Hill that they made, it's more recent but it tells the story. Get ahold of them and you can buy a copy for around 20.00 (I think, it was awhile ago and my wife got it for me).

Take care

Thorne EMI in England once released it on VHS. A friend of mine tracked it down with difficulty and bought a copy. It's PAL.

Try e-bay. Good luck.

I vaguely remember it but my recollection is that it was very good.

Thank you for your reply, I'm sorry but I don't understand what PAL is, what does that mean? I'm not giving up on finding it although it would be easier to give up! :)

reply

PAL is the TV colour system used in the UK and much of Europe. It's incompatible with the American NTSC system. It's a big problem with cassettes, but DVDs will usually play on computers regardless of the system they were designed to be viewed on. You might get a certain amount of jerkiness in the movements caused by the conversion, but any I have seen have worked fine. You can get software that performs the conversion between standards, and there are commercial companies that can do it.

As far as I know they haven't released this movie on DVD. I looked everywhere for it.

I have the film. I'd be happy to lend it to anyone who wants to reminiscence. I'm a big fan, of Bo Widerberg and the early worker's unions both :)

The long-lost 1971 film 'Joe Hill', directed by Bo Widerberg, has been restored and digitally remastered this year (2015) by the National Library of Sweden, and is available in a boxed set of 6 DVDs of Bo Widerberg films.
