Deserves more attention...

i would definitely not recommend this film to those fans of the western genre who salivate over films like 'tombstone' and 'wyatt earp'...this is a film for those who love the solemn, solitary beauty of the west, and not to mention, fine filmmaking...the cinematography is fantastic and the soundtrack blends perfectly with long shots of the landscape, truly capturing the isolation that must have been life in the west...one knows very little about the characters, aside from what their actions reveal, and yet somehow they avoid being two-dimensional...there's not a lot of backstory that would force us to develop certain opinions about them...we know as little as possible about who they are but their actions speak volumes about their natures...it's formulaic to some degree: there's the saddle-weary cowboy, his trusty companion, and the woman he left behind...and there the cliche ends...what's left is a stark and beautiful story of friendship, obligation, survival (both emotionally and physically), and loss...

definitely worth a look...

This movie is all about the true west, hard backbreaking work, true friends and hopes and dreams unrequited.A magnificent effort by Peter Fonda and Warren Oates.

It's one of the many unrecognized CLASSICS of 70's cinema, and of all westerns. It's a marvelous picture.

Yeah, I actually prefer this one over McCabe & Mrs. Miller.

A really fantastic film. I just finished seeing it for the first time and was extremely impressed (surprisingly so) with Peter Fonda's acting and directing. I look forward to seeing it again soon.

Yes a wonderful movie. It has a realistic touch and I was surprised that it was made in 1971. Long Raiders, Unforgiven and The Assination of Jesse James were later filmed but all have somehow a similiar look and feeling to this underrated movie.

"Well, nobody's perfect."
