Probably the best of the pre-80s series.

I've watched this one a number of times, and I think it's one of the best Godzilla films from this era, if not of all time. It is truly an epic battle full of great practical effects, Hedorah is actually a pretty cool monster that represents a real issue, and the movie has this unique look to it with much of the third act set in this smog-like unday (not day or night) which gives the movie a unique feel. It's a stepping stone film for the franchise.

I agree. I've always loved this movie. It might have been the first one I saw as a kid, and it is the only one I ever felt wasn't cheesey. Granted my filter wasn't that high as I was maybe seven the first time I saw it, but I felt like it had enough creepyness in it to take Godzilla seriously, which I couldn't say for a lot of the others.

I'd say it was one of the better ones from the 70's, at least, in terms of originality. Overall, I think the original and Godzilla Vs. The Thing rank higher for me.
